Who Built The Berlin Wall
|
Anybody who knows about the Berlin wall might have a question in mind that who built the berlin wall. A simple answer to that is Soviet Union was the country who built the berlin wall. The reason they had to build it is of more significance. In World War II, Soviet Union suffered very much because of German invasion and by the time the war ended, they conquered most of Germany which was after war, divided into four sectors. They had the largest one, East Germany. The other three sectors formed West Germany and belonged to the other three allied nations, France, Britain and the US. The division was in Berlin. East part of it belonged to the Soviets where it was cheaper to live and the West half had more facilities. There was a brain drain and people from East Germany were moving to West Germany or at least they would work there and live in East Germany.
This continued for a while until in 1961, the Soviets built the Berlin wall to separate East Germany permanently from West Germany and thus restricting the commute and move. They hoped it would stop the brain drain and help them keep their share of Germany in a profitable shape. This wall was strictly maintained and nobody without proper authorization was allowed to cross it. Although there were many attempts of doing such and eventually, they had to be stricter and apply force as necessary to stop illegal migration from one side to another, typically from East to West Germany. In order to do this, they used to shoot people who tried to cross the wall. It was very painful for the Germans since most of them had relative on the other side of the wall who they could not visit due to the wall. It was a separation of capitalism on the West side versus the socialism on the East side. |
